Jane Hicks Gentry: A Singer Among Singers by Betty N. Smith, When Englishman Cecil Sharp traveled through the South gathering material for his famous English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians, his most generous informant was Jane Hicks Gentry. But despite her importance in Sharp's collection, Gentry has remained only a name on his pages. Now Betty Smith, herself a folksinger, brings to life this artist and her songs and tales. Jane Hicks Gentry lived her entire life in the remote, mountainous northwest corner of North Carolina and was descended from old Appalachian families in which singing and storytelling were part of everyday life. Gentry took this tradition to heart, and her legacy includes ballads, songs, stories, and riddles. Smith provides a full biography of this vibrant woman and the tradition into which she was born, presenting seventy of Gentry's songs and fifteen of the "Jack" tales she learned from her grandfather.

Ring of Fire (song) - "Ring of Fire" is a country music song popularized by Johnny Cash, although it was originally written by June Carter and Merle Kilgore, and recorded by Anita Carter in 1962. The song documents June Carter's feelings of conflict arising from her relationship with Cash, and his drug addiction, with the refrain: Savoy Truffle - "Savoy Truffle" is a song written by George Harrison and performed by the Beatles on their self-titled album (the "White Album"). Harrison wrote the song as a tribute to his friend Eric Clapton's chocolate addiction, and indeed he derived the title and many of the lyrics from a box of Mackintosh Good News chocolates. Bruces' Philosophers Song (Bruces' Song) - Bruces' Philosophers Song (Bruces' Song) was a popular Monty Python song rendered in their stage shows ostensibly by a number of cod-Australian university lecturers. They were all called Bruce and taught at the University of Woolloomooloo. This Is My Song (1967 song) - This Is My Song was originally composed by Charlie Chaplin as the instrumental theme for his 1967 film A Countess from Hong Kong, starring Marlon Brando and Sophia Loren. When he added lyrics, he decided to offer the song to Al Jolson to record, unaware the entertainer had long been deceased.
